Millions of people around the world are fans of the English Premier League; fans who feel strongly about the sport of soccer’s integrity. At the beginning of the twentieth century, foreign billionaires began to invest in teams and the fans saw the sport changing around them. Teams like Manchester City and Chelsea found previously unattainable success with their new billion pound budgets, and the fans blamed the owners for changing the landscape of the league. However, the Premier League can only exist as long as fans spend money to watch it, so blame for the current state of affairs should not lay solely at the feet of the owners.
Future Plans
I have lived in Northern Virginia for my entire life, but I will be attending Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, in the fall. I plan on studying economics and eventually going to law school.
Why I Chose This Topic
I have played soccer since I was young, and during my time playing I fell in love with the sport. I began to follow the various European leagues and eventually fell on the English Premier League because it was the most accessible for an American. Most fans of the Premier League are familiar with the controversy of foreign billionaire owners, so I decided that would be a perfect topic for my paper.
